Sulzer two-stroke marine diesel engines — now manufactured under the Winterthur Gas & Diesel (WinGD) brand following Sulzer’s acquisition by WinGD — remain in widespread service across the global merchant fleet. Thousands of vessels operate Sulzer RTA, RND, RLA, and RL series main engines that continue to require a steady supply of spare parts for routine maintenance and overhaul. As a dedicated Sulzer marine engine spare parts supplier in India, Marinexa provides genuine OEM and quality reconditioned components for all major Sulzer engine series — sourced from Bhavnagar, Gujarat, adjacent to Alang ship recycling yard, with emergency 24–48 hour global delivery.
Sulzer Engine Models We Supply
Sulzer RTA Series (Most Common in Service)
The Sulzer RTA series is a long-stroke, single-acting, reversible two-stroke crosshead engine. It is among the most widely fitted engine types on bulk carriers, tankers, and container ships built between the 1980s and early 2000s:
- Sulzer RTA48T — 480mm bore, turbocharged; common on Handysize and Handymax bulk carriers
- Sulzer RTA52U / RTA52 — 520mm bore; Panamax bulk carriers and product tankers
- Sulzer RTA58T / RTA58 — 580mm bore; larger bulk carriers and tankers
- Sulzer RTA62U / RTA62 — 620mm bore; Aframax and Suezmax tankers
- Sulzer RTA72U / RTA72 — 720mm bore; VLCC and large bulk carrier applications
- Sulzer RTA84C / RTA84T — 840mm bore; the largest RTA variants; fitted on VLCCs and large bulk carriers
- Sulzer RTA96C — 960mm bore; ultra-large container ships (sister design to the Wartsila RT-flex96C)
Sulzer RND Series (Older Generation)
- Sulzer RND68, RND76, RND90 — older long-stroke two-stroke engines; still in service on older bulk carriers and general cargo vessels
- Sulzer RND105 — large bore variant; VLCC applications in older fleet
Sulzer RLA / RL Series
- Sulzer 6RLA56, 6RLA66 — medium-bore engines used on smaller vessels
- Sulzer RL Series — earlier generation; common on coastal vessels and older cargo ships
WinGD (Winterthur Gas & Diesel) Series
- WinGD X52, X62, X72, X82, X92 — modern successors to the Sulzer RTA series; electronically controlled engines on vessels built from 2015 onwards
- WinGD RT-flex series — common rail electronically controlled versions

Turbocharger Parts (Sulzer-Fitted)
Sulzer RTA engines are typically turbocharged using ABB TPS/VTR series or MAN B&W TCA series turbochargers. We supply parts for both — see our dedicated pages:
- ABB turbocharger spare parts — TPS57, TPS61, VTR series
- MAN B&W TCA series turbocharger components
Cooling and Ancillary Parts
- Cooling water pumps — jacket water and piston cooling pumps
- Lubricating oil pumps
- Scavenge air cooler elements — charge air cooler core replacement bundles
- Relief valves, safety valves, indicator cocks
- Cylinder cover O-rings and gaskets — full cylinder cover seal kits
Sulzer RTA vs WinGD — Parts Compatibility
A key question for fleet operators managing both older Sulzer RTA and newer WinGD engines: parts are generally NOT interchangeable between the two generations, even for similar bore sizes, due to design changes in the cylinder unit, fuel system, and electronic control components. WinGD engines use electronically-controlled fuel injection and exhaust valve actuation; the hydraulic and mechanical components differ significantly from the Sulzer RTA mechanical system.
Always specify your engine model, bore size, and serial number when ordering to ensure correct parts supply. Our technical team can verify compatibility before dispatch.
Genuine OEM vs Reconditioned Sulzer Parts
| Factor | Genuine OEM (WinGD) | Reconditioned (Alang) |
|---|---|---|
| Source | WinGD / authorised licensee | Removed from scrapped vessels at Alang |
| Price | Full OEM pricing | 35–65% below OEM |
| Lead time | 2–6 weeks for large bore components | Often in stock — dispatch same day |
| Best for | Class survey, new overhaul specification | Emergency repair, running repairs, older tonnage |
For large-bore Sulzer RTA engines (RTA72, RTA84, RTA96), OEM lead times for cylinder liners and pistons can extend to 4–8 weeks. Our Alang-sourced reconditioned components often provide the only viable option for getting a vessel back in service quickly.
Why Source Sulzer Parts from Marinexa?
- Alang proximity — many large container ships and tankers carrying Sulzer RTA engines are broken at Alang; we have continuous access to quality reconditioned RTA components at a fraction of OEM cost
- Large bore expertise — we understand the specific challenges of sourcing parts for 720mm–960mm bore engines where OEM options are limited and expensive
- Emergency delivery — 24–48 hour global dispatch for in-stock items; critical for vessels that cannot wait weeks for OEM supply
- Single-source convenience — OEM + reconditioned from one supplier; one point of contact for your entire Sulzer/WinGD parts requirement
- Technical documentation — we provide full material traceability and inspection records with reconditioned major components
FAQs — Sulzer Marine Engine Spare Parts
Is Sulzer the same as WinGD now?
Sulzer’s marine two-stroke engine business was acquired by China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) and rebranded as Winterthur Gas & Diesel (WinGD) in 2015. New engines are now sold under the WinGD brand. However, all engines built before 2015 carry the Sulzer nameplate and require Sulzer-specification parts. WinGD is the sole authorised OEM source for both Sulzer legacy parts and new WinGD engine parts.
Can reconditioned Sulzer cylinder liners be used for class surveys?
Reconditioned liners can be accepted by class surveyors if they meet dimensional tolerances specified in the class rules and the engine maintenance manual. We provide dimensional inspection records with all reconditioned liners. Your class society surveyor will make the final determination — we recommend discussing with your superintendent before planned survey overhauls.
Do you stock parts for older Sulzer RND series engines?
Yes. OEM availability for RND series engines (RND68, RND76, RND90, RND105) can be very limited, making Alang-sourced reconditioned parts often the only practical option. Contact us with your engine details — we frequently have RND components available from Alang stock.
